Silicon Pixel Detectors for Beauty and Beyond

Abstract: Silicon pixel detectors play central role in modern high energy experiments. Functionality is continuously being added to address requirements such as speed, precision, rate, radiation hardness and timing capability. These developments will be discussed, taking as an example the hybrid silicon-pixel detector system of the LHCb Upgrade VELO (Vertex Detector), based on the VeloPix ASIC, derived from the Medipix/Timepix family of chips. The VeloPix is optimised for speed and radiation hardness, and will read out pixel sensors with 55 micron square pitch at hit rates of more than 900 Mhits/s. It shares many features with, and has been developed in synergy with, the Timepix3 and Timepix4 generation of ASICs, which are oriented towards medical applications. The hybrid pixel sensors will be mounted just 5 mm from the LHC beams on silicon cooling wafers incorporating internal micro channels where bi-phase CO2 coolant will circulate. The role of hybrid pixels at the LHCb Upgrade and for future intensity frontier applications will be discussed. Brief CV of the speaker: Dr Paula Collins is a Senior Scientist at CERN. She has worked for many years in emergent silicon-sensor technology and led two major projects at CERN: the MicroVertex silicon tracker of the DELPHI experiment at LEP, and the VELO detector of the LHCb experiment at the LHC. She is currently working for the LHCb experiment, directing efforts to install the new pixel detector for the upcoming LHC run.
