Description
Some of the most puzzling questions left unanswered by the Standard Model of particle physics can be found in the so-called flavour sector. Why are there three generations of fundamental fermions? What fixes the quark masses, and why do they span such an enormous range? What determines the hierarchical structure of the couplings in quark transitions? What is the origin of CP violation? Flavour physics is also a powerful tool of discovery, sensitive to mass scales far above those accessible in direct collider searches. In this seminar I shall introduce the main principles of flavour physics before focusing on recent experimental advances, many coming from the LHCb experiment at CERN. Several of these measurements have attracted great interest, on account of the apparent imperfect agreement they exhibit with respect to Standard Model predictions. I will conclude by sketching the future prospects in the field over the coming two decades. About speaker: Guy Wilkinson FRS is Professor of Physics in University of Oxford. He wins 2017 James Chadwick Medal and Prize of the Institute of Physics for “his outstanding contribution to the experimental study of heavy quarks and CP violation, most especially for his leadership of, and his decisive contributions to, the LHCb experiment at CERN”. In 2018 he is elected as Fellow of the Royal Society. Prof. Wilkinson FRS is a funding member of the LHCb experiment at CERN and serves as physics coordinator and Spokesperson of the LHCb experiment. He is currently focused on the field of quark flavour physics, with a particular interest in the decays of b and c-hadrons and is a driving force behind the LHCb upgrade.
