Abstract:
The exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the temperature-baryon chemical potential plane is fundamental to our understanding of the structure of strongly interacting matter. In this talk, I will trace how our knowledge of the phase diagram has evolved over the past 25 years and describe how the precision beam energy scan at RHIC will further illuminate this question. I will also discuss the limitations that arise from dynamic experiments as they are unavoidable in relativistic heavy ion collisions. Finally, I will discuss the prospect of studying non-equilibrium properties of near-equilibrium QCD matter in the context of the experiments at RHIC.
