Physic of di-leptons in HI Collisions - A Review

Speaker: Joachim Stroth (Goethe University Frankfurt and GSI)

Time: Apr. 27(Tuesday)  6:00am (San Fransisco), 9:00am (New York), 3:00pm (Frankfurt), 6:30pm(New Delhi), 9:00pm (Beijing), 10:00pm (Tokyo)

Abstract:

Dileptons play a particular role in the investigation of strong-interaction matter. They probe the electromagnetic current of the hadrons and thus provide direct access to microscopic properties of the medium formed in (ultra-)relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Due to the leptonic final state, the signal can leave the interaction zone any time and unaffected by strong final-state interaction.

The goal of dilepton spectroscopy is to identify the fraction of radiation which is emitted from the thermalized strong-interaction medium, evolving under extreme conditions of temperature and pressure. This endeavor not only requires precise approximation of the combinatorial pairs, but also a detailed study of the contribution from eventually hard, initial-state processes and late production due to decays of hadrons after freeze-out.

This presentation will give an overview of the achievements of dilepton spectroscopy in heavy-ion collisions and will also report results from related studies of proton and pion beam induced dilepton production off protons.

In the outlook, the role of dilepton spectroscopy in the quest for landmarks of the QCD phase diagram and in the understanding of the mechanisms of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking will be addressed.
