Abstract:
In the Standard Model of Particle Physics, the Higgs boson has a central role related to the electroweak symmetry breaking and the generation of particle masses. In this seminar, I will present the experimental evidence of the Higgs boson decay to a pair of muons from the CMS experiment. Besides discussing the result with the Run 2 dataset, I will discuss the future prospect, with a focus on the opportunities enabled by a new precision timing detector in CMS in the High-Luminosity LHC era. I will introduce the detector design and test beam characterization of sensor prototypes, reaching the target design goal of 30-40 ps resolution for MIPs.
The speaker:
Dr. Nan Lu is a Postdoctoral Scholar Research Associate at the California Institute of Technology. Dr. Lu obtained Bachelor of Science Degree at the University of Science and Technology of China in 2011, and PhD in physics at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor in 2017. Dr. Lu’s contributions to the LHC Higgs physics studies include evidence of Higgs boson decay to a pair of muons and search for di-Higgs production in CMS, and the study of the Higgs boson couplings, spin and parity in ATLAS. Dr. Lu has also made important contributions to the R&D and prototyping of the Barrel Timing Layer (BTL) in the CMS MIP Timing Detector. She served as Caltech BTL assembly center contact person in 2019-2020.
