DESCRIPTION:The exponentiation of soft photon radiation is a classic resul
t of QED\, but for QED effects on objects with structure a more general ap
proach is required. In this seminar I discuss how modern methods of effect
ive field theory and factorization (more familiar for the strong interacti
on) result in a systematic treatment of QED effects in decays of B mesons
to a lepton pair\, or a pair of mesons\, including the summation of large
logarithms. A generalization of light-cone distribution amplitudes of li
ght and heavy mesons to include electromagnetic interactions is introduced
. On top of adding precision\, QED offers surprises: for B -> mu mu\, th
e QED correction is enhanced in heavy-quark power counting\, and reveals t
hat the process is no longer a pure annihilation decay.\n\nAbout the Speak
er:\nProf. Martin Beneke received his doctorate at the Technical Universit
y of Munich on the structure of perturbative series in higher order in 199
3 and habilitated in Heidelberg in 1998. At the age of 33 he became head o
f the Chair of Theoretical Physics (Department E) at the RWTH Aachen Unive
rsity. In 2008 Prof. Martin Beneke was awarded the Leibniz Prize (the most
important research award in Germany)\, on account of his significant cont
ributions to the elementary particle physics. At present he has published
150 original scientific works collecting more than 22000 citations in tota
l (with 12 papers cited more than 500 times and the average citations abov
e 150). In 2012 Prof. Martin Beneke was appointed to the Chair of Theoreti
cal Elementary Particle Physics at the Technical University of Munich.\n\n
