Description

Abstract:

There is a long history in particle physics of discovering new phenomena at a high energy scale through the effects of virtual particles at a much lower energy scale. Doing this usually requires very large datasets, an experiment that is extremely well understood and the capability to deal with theoretical uncertainties from Standard Model effects. Using the results from the analysis of the electroweak penguin decay B0 ā†’ K*0 Ī¼+ Ī¼-, I will discuss how this works in practise and how we can use this to either discover New Physics or set limits at the multi-TeV scale. I will compare the result to measurements in other decay channels and discuss what the current status is on understanding the "b anomalies".

About the speaker:

Prof Ulrik Egede is the head of the Particle Physics group at Monash University (Australia). He obtained his PhD from Lund University (Sweden) on detector development for the ATLAS experiment before moving to the field of flavour physics as part of the BaBar experiment. He spent 20 years in the UK at Rutherford lab as well as at Imperial College London before establishing an experimental particle physics group at Monash in 2019. He joined the LHCb experiment in 2000 and established the area of Rare Decays. In addition to data analysis he has made important contributions to the phenomenology of electroweak penguin decays, the development of particle ID detectors and large scale Grid computing.
