Solar atmospheric neutrinos: implications for solar physics and dark matter

Abstract:

The Sun is a high energy neutrino source due to cosmic rays interacting with the solar atmosphere. These solar atmospheric neutrinos are realistically within reach in current and near future experiments.  However, evidences from solar atmospheric gamma rays show that solar magnetic fields could significantly affect the cosmic ray interactions, and thus the neutrino flux. I will review current theoretical progress in understanding the cosmic-ray interaction in the Sun under magnetic fields, and the detection status and prospects for high-energy gamma rays and neutrinos.  Finally, I will discuss briefly the implications of solar atmospheric neutrinos on dark matter searches from the Sun.

 

About the speaker:

Dr. Ng received his PhD in the Ohio State University. After doing postdocs in the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and the GRAPPA institute of University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, he joined the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he is currently an Assistant Professor.  His main research focus is astrophysical searches of new physics, in particular dark matter, as well as high-energy astro-particles physics, in particular on the gamma-ray and neutrino emissions from the Sun.  He also recently joined the LHAASO collaboration.
