Ultra-peripheral collisions (UPCs) occur when relativistic heavy ions pass each other without overlapping. This process turns their intense electromagnetic fields into streams of quasi-real photons, enabling photon-induced processes in a clean nuclear environment. UPCs provide a unique laboratory to study a wide range of fundamental phenomena, including nuclear/nucleon structure, quantum electrodynamics (QED) under extreme conditions, and physics beyond the Standard Model.
The physics explored in UPCs is highly complementary to the goals of the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) and the planned Polarized Electron-Ion Collider in China (EicC). Results from UPCs offer critical input and benchmarks for future electron-ion scattering experiments, helping to refine our understanding of hadron structure and the non-linear dynamics of QCD in the high-density regime.
The 3rd Workshop on Ultra-Peripheral Collision Physics will be held in Guangzhou from 21st to 24th November, 2025. The topics of the workshop include but are not limited to:
-
Nuclear/nucleon structure
-
Precision tests of QED and BSM physics, including strong-field QED studies driven by intense lasers
-
New directions in UPC, conection to heavy-ion physics, synergies with EIC/EicC
-
Properties of quark matter under extreme electromagnetic fields
