Description
The VErtex LOcator (VELO) detector is positioned around the beam interaction region of the Large Hadron Collider, as part of the LHCb experiment. It is fundamental to reconstruct primary vertices
(PVs) from the collisions and secondary vertices from the decays of long-lived particles such as B and D mesons. It encompasses 52 modules carrying hybrid silicon pixel detectors, each carrying a 200 um n-on-p planar silicon sensor, with 55x55um channels readout by the Velopix ASIC capable of being readout at a rate of 30 MHz. These modules are separated from LHC’s primary vacuum by a lightweight RF-box, which also protects them from beam-induced RF perturbations. In this talk we will go over the detector's main characteristics, present aggregated results concerning the VELO performance, the impact and monitoring of radiation damage and the operational experience of commissioning and running a detector during Run 3.
