Description
The Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detectors have been playing a key role in delivering the successful physics programme of the LHCb experiment. The RICH system is composed of two detectors, RICH1 and RICH2, in charge of delivering excellent charged hadron identification over a wide momentum range. The first generation of RICH detectors operated successfully during the LHC Run1&2 periods and underwent a major first phase of Upgrade to cope with the five-fold increase in luminosity. A new LHCb upgrade is in preparation, to fully exploit the physics potential of High-Lumi LHC. Within the framework of the LHCb Upgrade II program, the RICH detectors are undergoing a comprehensive redesign to cope with substantially increased luminosity up to 1.0e+34 cm-2 s-1, with higher track multiplicities and occupancy approaching those of the current generation general-purpose detectors. This contribution presents the main technological challenges for the RICH Upgrade II concerning photon detectors, electronics and optical design.
