DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Andreas Schachner (Cornell University)\nString theo
ry provides our most developed framework for unifying quantum mechanics an
d gravity\, but connecting it to the physics of our Universe requires a de
tailed understanding of how ten-dimensional geometry gives rise to four-di
mensional cosmology. In this talk\, I will discuss recent progress toward
this goal using a combination of new analytic techniques and large-scale c
omputational tools. I will highlight our recent construction of explicit c
andidate de Sitter solutions\, as well as new mechanisms for generating hi
erarchies of scales. \n\nBio:\nAndreas Schachner is a postdoctoral resear
cher in theoretical physics at Cornell University. He obtained his PhD fro
m the University of Cambridge\, working with Fernando Quevedo\, after stud
ying physics in Heidelberg and mathematics at Cambridge. His research focu
ses on string phenomenology and string compactifications\, in particular f
 lux vacua\, moduli stabilisation\, axions\, and quantum corrections\, as w
ell as the development of computational and machine learning methods for e
 xploring the string landscape.\nhttps://indico.ihep.ac.cn/event/30445/
