Description

Abstract:

The mechanism that drives core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) is one of the foremost open problems in astrophysics. This talk will explore two critical fronts in the effort to solve it. First, we will examine breakthroughs in multiphysics simulations that are clarifying the role of neutrino-driven convection and other instabilities. Second, we will discuss how neutrino observations—both existing ones and those from next-generation detectors—serve as direct probes of the supernova engine and of the extreme physics at its core.

About the speaker:

Shuai Zha is interested in supernovae, with a focus on their explosion mechanisms. He obtained his PhD in 2019 from the Department of Physics, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He then held postdoctoral positions at the Department of Astronomy, Stockholm University (2019–2021) and at the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (2021–2023). Since July 2023, he has been a researcher in the Binary Population Synthesis Group and the International Centre of Supernovae at Yunnan Observatories, CAS.
