The 3rd China-South Africa Joint Symposium on Nuclear Physics —Problems in Fundamental and Applied Nuclear Physics Shandong University, Weihai, China August 27-29, 2015 FIRST CIRCULAR BACKGROUND The nuclear physics communities in China and South Africa have a long standing relationship which starts from the successful collaboration between Peking University and Stellenbosch University and has been developed over the past 12 years. Through strong collaborative ties and a number of exchange visits, it has resulted in internationally acclaimed research output. Since 2009 this collaboration has been extended to several universities and national research institutes which include the iThemba Laboratory for Accelerator Based Sciences and University of the Western Cape in South Africa as well as Shandong University, Beihang University, Tsinghua University, and China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE) in China. Encouraged by the fruitful collaborations, the first Joint China‐South Africa Symposium on Nuclear Physics was held at Beihang University in Beijing in September 2011, the second by Stellenbosch University in December 2012. PRESENT MEETING Shandong University will host the 3rd Symposium in Weihai, China. This symposium will present opportunity for interaction, with the main motive to bring together not only leading nuclear physicists from South Africa and China but also young researchers from both sides. The main topics will be dedicated to nuclear reactions, nuclear structure, chirality in nuclei, nuclear physics with radioactive ion beams, neutron physics, nuclear astrophysics, accelerator physics, neutrino physics, environmental radiation and applications. Possibilities to extend the co-operation among physicists from China and South Africa will also be discussed. This symposium will certainly be helpful in exchange of new ideas, sharing of information and presentation of latest research results. The main aim is to strengthen the existing collaboration and to promote new collaborations between the South African and Chinese nuclear physics communities and thereby to enhance the development of nuclear physics and its applications on both sides. Speakers of each session are selected by the coordinators of the session. The program will include speakers from both South Africa and China and in addition, experts from the field from other institutions. For more information see the meeting web page (http://indico.ihep.ac.cn/event/5062/ ) The Symposium program will cover a report back on existing as well as new developments in the field of fundamental nuclear physics, applied nuclear physics, physics of underground laboratories and nuclear astrophysics in the context of the China-South Africa collaboration in nuclear science. TOPICS The main topics include: • Chirality in nuclei • New radioactive ion beam facilities • Nuclear reactions, beams and facilities, techniques and applications • Nuclear structure, clusters, modern microscopic methods, photon strength functions • Neutron physics and applications • Accelerator Physics • Environmental Radiation • Towards the underground laboratory ORGANIZING COMMITTEE Robert Bark (iThemba), Lowry Conradie (iThemba LABS), Lisheng GENG (Beihang), Hui HUA (Peking), Zhipan LI (South-west China), Weiping LIU(CIAE), Yugang MA (SINAP), Jie MENG (Peking / Beihang, Chair), Rudolph Nchodu (iThemba LABS), R.
