Abstract: A multi-phase transport (AMPT) contains both parton and hadron phases as a dynamical model of high energy nuclear collisions. For heavy ion collisions at and below BES energies, it needs to be further developed. I will first discuss the improvement of the AMPT initial condition by including the finite nuclear thickness, with the effect also demonstrated with semi-analytical methods. I will then show the improvement of the parton cascade and the extraction of eta/s for partons in a box. Finally I will discuss future AMPT developments that are needed to better study high baryon density physics.
