Description
ABSTRACT:We have studied the effect of individual supernovae (SNe) on molecular clouds (MCs), based on a high-resolution 250 pc simulation. The position and time of SNe is computed self-consistently for the first time by resolving the formation of individual massive stars. We have found that SNe are responsible for both the formation and dispersal of MCs. Base on this simulation, we have generated synthetic Herschel observations from our SN-driven simulation, which we have then compared with real observations from the “Herschel Infrared Galactic Plane Survey” (Hi-GAL). The synthetic observations have allowed us to provide a novel interpretation of the compact sources in the Hi-GAL survey. In particular, we have shown that their masses are mostly due to projection effects (real three-dimensional clumps are typically ten times less massive), and that many source classified as protostellar clumps do not contain protostars. Then we explore the infall rates of massive clumps from the simulation, and compare them with infall rates measured in massive Hi-GAL clumps. They will help us understand how rapidly massive stars are assembled, and thus discriminate between different theoretical models for the formation of massive stars.
