W mass discussion

Asia/Shanghai
Description
W bosons mediate the weak interaction, one of the fundamental forces in physics. The Standard Model (SM) of particle physics places tight constraints on the mass of the W boson, thus determine the W boson mass provide a critical test to the SM. The Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) Collaboration recently announced a precise measurement of the W boson mass extracted from data taken at the Tevatron particle accelerator. Surprisingly, the researchers found that the mass of the boson was significantly larger than the SM predicts, with a discrepancy of 7 standard deviations (https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abk1781). Prof. Ashutosh Kotwal from Duke University will introduce this exciting result on behalf of the CDF Collaboration. This results have significant influence for the New Physics hunting in particle physics. After Prof. Kotwal's presentation, a Panel discussion will be organized, to discuss the theoretical interpretation of this measurement, as well as the implications for future experiments, especially the CEPC.
