The LHCb experiment has resumed operation for the LHC Run 3 with an ambitious, freshly upgraded detector. Most parts of the tracking, particle identification and vertexing system have been replaced and all electronics have been upgraded to enable the experiment to run more efficiently and at five times the luminosity of the previous experiment. The VELO, or silicon VErtex LOcator has been replaced with a new 41 million pixel detector capable of 40 MHz readout, operating in the LHC vacuum and cooled with evaporative CO2 delivered via a novel microchannel technology. This seminar will give a tour of the VELO design choices, installation and commissioning status, as well as discussing what further enhancements could be implemented for the future LHCb Upgrade II.
About the speaker:
Paula Collins is a senior scientist at CERN. Over the last decade she has led the development and construction of the Upgraded LHCb VELO pixel detector. Before that she was project leader of the LHCbsilicon strip vertex detector, and led R&D for radiation hard sensor development for high luminosity operation. During the time of the LEP collider, Paula was a member of the DELPHI experiment, where she had particular responsibility for the muon chambers, before she became project leader of the innermost vertex detector, which comprised microstrips, ministrips and pixel technologies, and was fundamental for the b-tagging performance of the experiment. Paula lives close to Geneva with her family.
