Description

Abstract:

Large xenon detectors such as PandaX-4T, XENONnT, and LZ are in a race to detect potential dark matter particles. These detectors contain significant amounts of Xe-136 and Xe-134, both of which are candidate isotopes for neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ). We report the search results for 0νββ and two-neutrino double beta decay (2νββ) of Xe-134 using the PandaX-4T detector. While no positive signals have been detected to date, PandaX-4T has set the most stringent limits for Xe-134 2νββ and 0νββ half-lives, surpassing the previously best-reported result by factors of 32 and 2.7, respectively. Thanks to the effective self-shielding of large monolithic xenon targets and ever-improving detector performance, future detectors such as PandaX-xT are also becoming more competitive in double beta decay and other rare event searches, as well as precision nuclear physics measurements.

About the speaker:

Ke Han graduated with a bachelor's degree from the School of Physics at Peking University in 2002, and with a Ph.D. from Yale University in 2009. Afterwards, he held postdoctoral and associate research scientist positions at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Yale University respectively. He joined Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2016, and is currently a professor at the School of Physics and Astronomy. He has been involved in neutrino experiment research and new detector development for a long time, and participated in experiments such as KamLAND and PROSPECT. He is currently a member of the PandaX and CUORE collaborations, focusing on the search for Majorana neutrinos with neutrinoless double beta decay experiments.
