Since its discovery 80 years ago by Hahn and Strassman, the interest in the fission of nuclei has never declined, not only because the studies on fission is fundamentally important in the domain of nuclear technology and energy production, but also because fission, as well as fast fission when the fission barrier vanishes, see increasing relevance in many topics including nuclear reactions dynamics, nuclear equations of state, heavy element recycling in stellar environment. In spite of the enormous progress achieved in nuclear physics, several facets of the fission mechanism still remain poorly understood. A unified description of the process in its whole complexity is still out of sight. Moreover, a complete experimental reconstruction of the fission events is also challenging before the related fundamental nuclear properties and reaction dynamics can be probed. Because of the emerging interests on the fission arises, it is timely to have an international workshop on fission and heavy ion reactions. The workshop aims at the most recent theoretical and experimental progress on the studies on fission, heavy ion reactions associated with fast fission and the relevance of fission in the studies of astrophysics etc.
