Abstract: We discuss a possible direct link between experimental particle yield data and lattice QCD (LQCD) results on the lowest order fluctuation observable. We motivate the equation of state of the QCD hadronic phase in the context of the S-matrix approach to QCD thermodynamics and confront the results with LQCD and heavy-ion collisions data. The importance of exact conservation laws to identify a non-critical baseline for net charge fluctuations in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies will be explained and quantified. Discussing the criticality of strongly interacting matter due to chiral symmetry restoration we introduce expected systematics of higher-order cumulants of net-baryon number fluctuations based on the effective chiral model calculations within the functional renormalization group approach.
