From QCD to QGP: Strong interaction in extremis

Abstract:
Though it became evident after the development of the quark model that there exists ever increasing number of hadron states with a limiting temperature for strong interacting matter, it was the discovery of the asymptotic freedom of QCD in 1973 that leads to the realization of phase transition from hadron to quark-gluon matter at high temperature. QCD also provides the theoretical foundation for determining the phase transition temperature and using hard QCD processes as probes of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP).  Experiments at the Relativistic Heavy-ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have shown a strongly coupled QGP created in the center of high-energy heavy-ion collisions. This talk will review the progress made in understanding the properties of this strongly coupled QGP in the last two decades through studies of collective phenomena in soft hadrons and hard probes using energetic jets. The interplay between soft and hard probes and spin dynamics in heavy-ion collisions will be highlighted and the perspective of future directions will be discussed.

报告人简介:王新年教授是美国劳伦斯伯克利(Lawrence Berkeley)国家实验室资深研究员。王新年教授先后毕业于山东大学(本科)和高能物理研究所(硕士),并于1989年获得美国俄勒冈大学物理系博士,后在劳伦斯伯克利国家实验室和杜克大学做博士后工作。自1992起年,王新年教授受聘于劳伦斯伯克利国家实验室的研究员,1997至今为该实验室的资深研究员,并于1999-2007期间,任该实验室核理论室主任。王新年教授还曾任华中师范大学粒子物理研究所教授和所长。2002年,他当选为美国物理学会(APS)会士。2010始,王新年教授任美国能源部喷注合作组(JET Collaboration)负责人及共同发言人。王新年教授的研究兴趣覆盖高能核物理领域里中的初始粒子产生、喷注淬火、流体力学和自旋极化等课题。他的工作引领了高能核核碰撞领域的发展,加深了人们对极端条件下强相互作用物质的认识。
