Beihang University is proud to host the 2026 International Summer School, which will take place at Beihang University Shahe Campus between August 3 and 7, 2026 with hybrid format. The theme of this 5-day course is Radiotherapy Techniques and Modalities for Medical Physicists. This summer school is the fifth in its series. The first (General Clinical Issues) was held virtually in 2021. The second (Particle Therapy), the third (Treatment Planning System), and the fourth (Radiobiology) were held in a hybrid format in 2023, 2024, and 2025, respectively. More information about the past events can be found in the following links: 2021, 2023, 2024, 2025.
Radiotherapy Techniques and Modalities, spanning a comprehensive spectrum from conventional linear accelerators to advanced image-guided systems, form the technological backbone for modern precision oncology. Mastery of this domain is critical for medical physicists to match the optimal hardware with specific clinical scenarios. This field encompasses the evolution of Treatment Modalities, including “up-to-date” LINACs, hybrid systems like MR-LINAC and PET-LINAC that integrate diagnostic imaging for adaptive workflows, specialized platforms such as Cyberknife, Gammaknife, Tomotherapy, and cutting-edge innovations like e-Flash and Particle Therapy Machines. Concurrently, it involves the implementation of sophisticated Treatment Techniques—such as IMRT/VMAT for complex shape conformation, SBRT/SRS for high-dose focal ablation, BNCT for targeted microdosimetry, TBI for systemic bone marrow preparation, SFRT for altered fractionation schedules, and ART for real-time plan adaptation. The fundamental goal lies in harnessing these specific machines and delivery strategies to ensure the planned dose distribution is physically realized, thereby maximizing therapeutic efficacy through technological precision while minimizing unintended exposure to surrounding normal tissues.
This course will be beneficial to students, both undergraduate and graduate, who are interested in medical physics or plan to pursue a career in this field. It will also be beneficial to individuals working in clinics or industry as medical physicists to learn how to manage their daily work, both in modality and in technique toward high quality radiotherapy. This course will be held in a Hybrid format (online and in-person). In-person participants will be provided with the field trip activity. We look forward to seeing you at the 2026 BUAA International Medical Physics Summer School!
