Language
Cantonese is the primary language in Hong Kong, but English is very widely used, especially in hotels, restaurants, and tourist areas.
Currency & Payment
The official currency is the Hong Kong Dollar (HKD). While credit cards are accepted in most places, we strongly recommend carrying some cash, as some traditional shops and restaurants may only accept cash payments.
ATMs are readily available at the airport and throughout the Tsim Sha Tsui area, including near the conference venue.
Power Outlets & Voltage
Hong Kong uses the British standard plug (Type G) with a voltage of 220V and a frequency of 50Hz. Travelers may need a plug adapter if their devices use a different plug type.
Transportation
-
MTR (Subway): The MTR system is the fastest and most efficient way to get around the city. It can be paid for using credit cards, Octopus cards, or cash at ticket machines.
-
Uber: Uber operates in Hong Kong and is a convenient alternative to taxis.
-
Taxi: Taxis are metered and widely available. Most accept cash, and some also take Octopus cards or credit cards.
-
Buses: Public buses are an affordable way to travel. However, some buses only accept cash or Octopus cards—exact change is required when paying with cash.
-
Octopus Card: A rechargeable smart card used for public transport, taxis, and even some shops and restaurants. It is highly recommended for convenience.
