Description
As a high-performance synchrotron radiation facility, the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF) relies on its control system as the core support to ensure stable beam current, equipment safety and efficient photon delivery. To address issues encountered by the control system during long-term operation, including hardware aging, communication bottlenecks, end-of-support operating systems, and reliance on imported key components, systematic upgrading, renovation and operation & maintenance optimization have been carried out.
The traditional VME-based power supply control architecture has been replaced with SoftIOC and an Ethernet distributed architecture. Additional improvements include upgrading the insertion device feedforward control system, renovating control network switches, establishing a high-precision time-stamp system and historical data platform, developing domestic processor-based IOC controllers, and adopting a homegrown Linux operating system. These measures have comprehensively improved system stability and the level of independent controllability.
A comparison of operational data from 2022 and 2025 shows that the annual number of control system failures dropped from 29 to 8, beam downtime reduced from 4.29 hours to 1 hour, and the MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) increased from 292 hours to 973 hours, representing a marked improvement in operational stability. This engineering practice can serve as a reference for the long-term operation, technical upgrading and localization substitution of control systems for synchrotron radiation light sources and similar large scientific facilities.
