Description
The Mu2e experiment, under construction at Fermilab, will search for charged lepton flavor violation in the coherent conversion of a muon to an electron in the electric field of an aluminum nucleus. The planned sensitivity of the experiment will be achieved using a pulsed proton beam with a time structure that allows rejection of beam-induced backgrounds. The Mu2e Extinction Monitor measures the time structure of the proton beam using a pixel tracking detector to identify particles from the production target that are either in-time and out-of-time with the expected beam pulses. Control and monitoring of this pixel system, which utilizes the FE-I4b readout chip, is performed using custom electronics and uses EPICS as the primary network control interface. This implementation runs under Debian Linux on a single board computer that interfaces with over 30 devices using GPIO signals and multiple I2C busses to provide over 200 process variables. We will describe the hardware, the EPICS drivers developed for the various sensors and interfaces used in the system, and the control and monitoring of these process variables using EPICS.
