Mikhail Feygenson is Division Head for Diffraction & Imaging at the European Spallation Source (ESS) and Adjunct Associate Professor at Uppsala University. He is a neutron scattering scientist with more than 18 years of experience using neutron scattering methods to study the structural, magnetic, and dynamic properties of advanced materials. Before joining ESS, he was an Instrument Scientist at the NOMAD diffractometer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Spallation Neutron Source and as a Research Associate at Brookhaven National Laboratory. He also contributed to the design and installation of the DREAM neutron diffractometer at ESS, through his ongoing work with Forschungszentrum Jülich. Dr. Feygenson’s expertise spans neutron powder diffraction, pair distribution function analysis and small-angle neutron scattering, with applications in energy materials, nanotechnology, magnetism, and quantum materials. Author and co-author of more than 80 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals, including Nature Materials, Nature Communications, Physical Review Letters, and Advanced Materials. He contributes actively to international peer review, scientific proposal assessment, neutron instrumentation development, and the supervision of students and early-career scientists.
