Hereon/MLZ: Dr. André Heinemann

Dr. André Heinemann © Bernhard Ludewig, FRM II / TUMDr. André Heinemann is an instrument scientist at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ) in Garching, Germany, where he is responsible for the SANS-1 small-angle neutron scattering instrument operated jointly by the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon and the Technical University of Munich. His research focuses on small-angle neutron and X-ray scattering, magnetic nanomaterials and fluids, and advanced methods for the characterization of complex nanostructured materials.

He completed his PhD at the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research (IFW Dresden), specializing in materials characterization using small-angle scattering. As a postdoctoral researcher at the V4 SANS instrument in Berlin, he pioneered the application of polarized neutrons in SANS to improve the separation and analysis of nuclear and magnetic scattering contributions. Following a second postdoctoral position at ANSTO in Sydney, he joined MLZ in 2009 to lead the development of the SANS-1 instrument.

In addition to neutron instrumentation and experimental method development, Dr. Heinemann develops advanced approaches for quantitative data analysis and modelling, including Bayesian strategies and the integration of complementary experimental data. His work combines instrumentation, polarization techniques and computational methods to extend the capabilities of small-angle scattering for materials science and complex magnetic systems.
